This evening we shared traditional Serbian dishes with our friends including pogaca, polenta, bacala, sarmas and kupus i grah.
We welcome our guests with a shot of slivovitz and the greeting:
Mir Bozji, Hristos se Rodi!
Peace on Earth, Christ is Born, glorify Him!
Pogaca is a round flat serbian bread that contains a coin. We all broke the bread together and the person who received the coin will have good luck for the rest of the year.
Next we pass a bowl of polenta. With eyes closed we each spoon some into the palm of our hands trying to get the largest portion as another sign of good luck.
The bacala is salted cod with garlic and diced potatoes and olive oil.
The sarma is cabbage stuffed with ground beef, pork, ham, rice, onion and garlic cooked in a beef stock.
The kupus i grah is pinto beans and sauerkraut in a thick brown sauce.
A boquet of scallions (known as roses) is the table centerpiece.
