We had the pleasure of Cat-sitting in Manayunk for our daughter while she vacationed at the beach. Manayunk is National Historic District located along the Schuykll River. It’s name is derived from the Lanapr Indian word meaning “where we drink”.
Our first night we dined at Couch Tomato with Jessica and Anthony. The unique restaurant features local organic foods. The standout dish for me was the cod with corn and fennel that Michael ordered.
Lunch on Monday was at the Manayunk Tavern, a warm casual neighborhood bar where we enjoyed the mini crab cake sliders with lettuce, tomato and chipotle remoulade. Zesty Mediterranean Restaurant was our dinner destination. Zesty combines the best of Greek and Italian cuisines. The server was delightful and the pasta in marinara sauce with mussels was delish as was the Greek Salad. Our server recommended the Tsilili Askitikos dry red Greek wine that we enjoyed immensely.
On Sunday we took an Uber into Center City Philadelphia for brunch at Cuba Libre. Brunch began with a tequila mojito for me and a mango mojito for Michael. We enjoyed the fried plaintains with the pineapple guacamole. Then off for our trip around the city on the Philly Phlash tour. One of our stops took us to Rocky’s statue where we climbed the famous steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum. On Tuesday, after working out and visiting the unique shops, we walked the trail to Manayunk Brewery featuring one of the largest outdoor decks in Philadelphia. The artwork added to the atmosphere with wall art depictions of Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Bob Marley and other musicians. A jazz mural was painted on one entire wall. We chose the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with honey ranch dressing topped with lettuce, tomato and sliced onion on a brioche bun and a golden Belgian beer called Sardine. That evening we returned to the Brewery for jazz night and Sushi for me and fish and chips for Michael. Wednesday, we took an Uber to Ardmore and explored the shops including DiBruno Brothers that featured a full selection of fresh pasta, bread, cheese, and specialty foods. We enjoyed lunch at It’s No Your Average Joe’s Restaurant. We watched some Wimbledon tennis matches with while enjoying some wine to complement our lunch. Michael chose the lobster roll and I chose the Greek salad. We made a stop during one of our walks at Tubby Robot Ice Cream Factory for cups of peach and mint chocolate chip flavors. Wednesday evening we dined at Jakes Wine Bar for Short Ribs N Artic Char. Delish! Thursday we returned to Jake’s Wine Bar for a pleasant lunch at an open window seat. We chose the gazpacho soup and Nicoise Salad and Rose wine. Thursday evenings are Stroll the Street events featuring live music, appetizer and drink specials. We chose the Goat bites at The Goats Beard Restaurant, an eatery that focuses on locally sourced products serving new American food. Goats Beard is actually a flowering herbaceous perennial plant. The goat bites are Lancaster County breaded chicken bites with sriracha, honey and blue cheese. Great snack! We also tried the Crazy Noodles at Chabaa Thai Restaurant. Wide noodles were served with tri-bell peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, egg and a soy oyster sauce.
Our culinary adventure through Manayunk was coming to an end as we were returning back home on the train on Friday. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our Cat sitting experience as well as all of the walking and exploring that we did throughout the week.
